Transforming a Cold War Nuclear Weapons Complex into a 21st Century Nuclear Security Enterprise
-
Completed one-of-a-kind construction projects like the National
Ignition Facility, Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility (HEUMF)
and the Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Application (MESA)
facility.
- U.S. stockpile less than one-quarter of what it was at the end of the Cold War.
- Reduced approximately $750 million in backlog maintenance.
- Eliminated three million square feet of excess buildings and structures.
Maintaining the safety, security and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear stockpile
-
Assessed the safety, security and effectiveness of the nuclear
stockpile without underground nuclear testing for 15 consecutive years.
-
Completed all refurbishment activities and deliveries of the W87
(2004), B61 spin rocket motor retrofits and B61-7/11 canned
subassemblies (2007).
Developing the fastest supercomputing platforms and the most advanced simulation and modeling capabilities in the world
- Three of the 10 fastest computers in the world.
- Two of the 10 world’s most energy efficient supercomputers.
Leveraging the best science, technology and research to advance our national security mission
- More than 93 R&D100 Awards since 2000.
- One Nobel Prize and three Enrico Fermi Awards winners.
- Nearly 4,000 postdoctoral researchers supported through Laboratory-Directed Research and Development since 2000.
- Designed, built and delivered all U.S. spaced-based sensors to detect nuclear detonations.
Securing and eliminating nuclear material around the globe
-
Returned 1,102 kilograms of Russian-origin HEU, 1,242 kilograms of
U.S.-origin HEU; and 187 kilograms of other HEU and plutonium from
vulnerable sites around the world.
- Secured 93 percent of Russian nuclear material and warhead sites of concern.
-
Monitored conversion of more than 382 metric tons of HEU from
dismantled Russian nuclear weapons into LEU fuel for U.S. power plants,
generating 10 percent of U.S. electricity.
Preventing nuclear smuggling and strengthening the nonproliferation regime
-
Installed radiation detection equipment at 221 Russian border crossings
and 94 sites (land borders, airports, and feeder airports) in 15 former
Soviet states, Eastern Europe, South Asia and other key countries and
at 30 megaports.
- Trained 13,000 export control officials from more
than 60 countries and international organizations to detect and deter
smuggling of WMD-related goods, resulting in key proliferation-sensitive
interdictions.
Powering the Nuclear Navy
-
Naval Reactors’ R&D enabled the delivery of the VIRGINIA-class
fast-attack submarine and the reactor plant for the next generation
GERALD FORD-class aircraft carrier.
- Initiated the transferring of
naval spent nuclear fuel from wet to dry storage at a production pace,
ensuring that spent nuclear fuel is safely and securely stored while
simultaneously ensuring maximum availability of all naval nuclear
assets.
Providing the nation with world class nuclear counterterrorism and emergency response capabilities
-
Partnered with more than 80 countries and 10 international
organizations to reduce the risk of radiological emergencies and nuclear
incidents worldwide and to enhance international capabilities to combat
nuclear terrorism.
- Deployed field teams around the world in response to radiological or nuclear emergencies 49 times.
-
Provided radiological monitoring support for a wide variety of
high-profile special events like the State of the Union, Super Bowl,
United Nations General Assembly, 2008 Beijing and Vancouver Olympics and
the Democratic and Republican political conventions.
Ensuring the security of NNSA sites and material
- 100 million miles of secure transportation without an incident of loss or release.
- Consolidated nuclear material across the enterprise, saving tax dollars and improving site security.
-
Disposed more than 1,800 metric tons of nuclear materials around the
enterprise, including more than 120 metric tons of special nuclear
materials.
Implementing cutting edge management reforms
- Supply Chain Management Center – has saved taxpayers $130 million since 2007.
- Increased efficiency of the Federal workforce
- Zero-Based Security Review will drive down security costs while sustaining highly effective security capabilities.
