Diabetes Mellitus

Tracer Bullet 01-1

SCOPE

Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by the body's inability to produce or use insulin properly, resulting in high levels of blood glucose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 15.7 million Americans have diabetes. Of those, 5.4 million are not aware that they are diabetic.

There are four types of diabetes mellitus. Type 1, previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes, is caused by autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors. In type 1 diabetes, the body produces no or extremely low levels of insulin. In type 2 diabetes, previously called non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes, the body cannot produce enough insulin for its needs or cannot use the insulin that is produced. Type 2 is associated with several risk factors including family history, obesity, increased age, and ethnicity. African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans are the three groups at highest risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Some groups of Asian and Pacific Islanders are also at greater risk than Anglo-Americans.

The third type, gestational diabetes, occurs during some pregnancies, but disappears once the pregnancy is over. Women who have had gestational diabetes in the past are more likely to have diabetes with subsequent pregnancies. Other risk factors for gestational diabetes are similar to the ones for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The fourth type of diabetes mellitus is a group of "other specific types" that have surgery, drugs, malnutrition, or infections among the causal factors. This type of diabetes accounts for only a small percentage of diabetes cases in the United States. Complications of diabetes include hypertension, heart attack, stroke, circulation problems, kidney failure, and blindness. This Tracer Bullet updates TB 86-6 and emphasizes patient information. Not intended to be a comprehensive bibliography, this compilation is designedas the name of the series impliesto put the reader "on target."
