Dyslexia

Tracer Bullet 91-3

SCOPE

Dyslexia is often identified as the inability to read at the expected levels for age and intelligence, despite adequate instruction and in the absence of hearing, visual, or neurological disorders. First described by W. Pringle Morgan and later by James Hinshelwood as congenital word blindness, the term "dyslexia" was coined in the late 1800s by Rudolf Berlin. Research on dyslexia was pioneered in the United States by Samuel Torrey Orton in the 1920s. Today dyslexia is estimated to occur in 2-8% of the school-age population. Some research has suggested that dyslexics are more likely to be left-handed than right-handed, that dyslexia is more prevalent in males than in females, and that dyslexia has a genetic basis. This guide is intended to assist the interested reader in identifying material on developmental dyslexia in the collections of the Library of Congress. Not meant to be a comprehensive bibliography, it is designed--as the name of the series implies--to put the reader "on target."
