SCOPE

In nuclear fission mass is converted into energy. This enormous release of energy is controlled at sustained rates in nuclear power generating plants. The heat that is generated is cooled by water which produces steam which in turn is used to run a turbine which generates electricity. The entire nuclear fuel cycle starts with mining of fissionable material such as uranium followed by the controlled reactions and release of energy in the nuclear reactor, culminating in the disposal and/or reprocessing of the waste material.

The use of nuclear power to generate electricity began in the late 1950s. About 15 percent of all electric power worldwide now comes from nuclear power plants; 20.7 percent of total U.S. electricity consumption, including electrical energy generation and transmission losses, is attributed to nuclear power.

This guide to nuclear energy is not intended as a comprehensive bibliography, but highlights selected works about the production, distribution, and transmission of nuclear energy. Many of the titles listed are available in the reference collection in the Science and Business Reading Room on the 5th floor of the Adams building at the Library of Congress.
