SCOPE

What do melting glaciers, eroding coastlines, worldwide crop damage, food shortages, absence of rainfall, shrinking aquifers, wildfires and lowered water tables all have in common? These are all possible results from the increased accumulation of “greenhouse gases” in the atmosphere, commonly called global warming, or global climate change.

Scientists study climate change over the æons of the Earth’s history as well as the much shorter period since human-induced changes have started to affect the atmosphere. Engineers attempt to devise technological solutions to problems caused by these changes and policy-makers and governments struggle with international protocols and methods of enforcement. The ever-increasing demands for fossil fuels and increasing energy consumption worldwide complicate the problem. Can technological innovations in energy production, or conservation methods, or innovative market solutions reverse the current trends soon enough? These and other questions confront us as we face the possibility of crossing the “point of no return.”

The following guide, an update of TB 06-6, is a review of the literature and vetted online resources on the topic. This and other recent Tracer Bullets are available online from the Science Reference Section, at: http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/tracer-bullets/tbs.html
