Develop/implement multi-year project involving a variety of timber harvest and road construction.
Location Summary
The project area is Wrangell Island, located within the Wrangell Ranger District of the Tongass National Forest. The community of Wrangell (population 2,500) is located on the island's north end.
2016-05 Wrangell Island Project DEIS (PDF 12730kb) The Forest Service analyzed four action alternatives and a No Action Alternative. Alternative 2 is the Forest Service's Preferred Alternative at this time, which proposes the harvest of 65 million board feet (MMBF) on 5,309 acres and the construction of approximately 32 miles of road.
1. Wrangell Island Project FEIS - Summary, Chapters 1 and 2 (PDF 9643kb) In the FEIS, four action alternatives and one no action alternative are analyzed. The action alternatives propose varying amounts of timber harvest and road construction associated with that harvest. The action alternatives also propose public motorized access on roads associated with the project. Chapter 1 - Purpose and Need for Action, Chapter 2 - Alternatives
