Research Project: Reducing Risk of Human and Domesticated Animal Infection with West Nile and Other Emerging Infectious Viruses Carried by Mosquitoes

Location: Mosquito and Fly Research Unit

Project Number: 6615-32000-046-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 11, 2006
End Date: Apr 30, 2011

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop new methods and strategies to reduce the risk of human and domesticated animal infection with West Nile and other emerging infectious viruses carried by mosquitoes.

Approach:
Discover, develop and evaluate new biological and chemical control methods for juvenile and adult mosquitoes that are the vectors of West Nile virus (WNV) and other emerging viruses (arboviruses). Track genetic changes in WNV and other arboviruses that may affect virulence to humans and animals using modern genetic techniques and GIS and remote sensing tools. Design new arbovirus risk reduction strategies based upon a better understanding of the natural history of arboviruses by considering the behavior of mosquitoes. Prepare for and reduce the risk of emerging arboviral disease transmission by identifying and characterizing the spatial and temporal distribution of viruses associated with mosquitoes and by developing new and improved sentinel (detection) systems for arbovirus vectors.
