2006 Annual Report
4d.Progress report.
This report documents work conducted under a Reimbursable Agreement between the USDA-ARS-RRRU at Cheyenne, WY, and the Wyoming State Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project, #5409-22660-002-00D Rangeland Ecosystems: Characterization, Management and Monitoring. A series of seminars and workshops were held between January and July to report advancements accomplished under and earlier agreement, to demonstrate the image analysis software program SamplePoint, and to give land managers opportunity to use the program. One outcome of this has been the agreement of interested livestock operators having BLM allotments to test joint cooperative monitoring using ground photography. The photography will be collected by ranchers on their allotments. The measurement of ground cover (bare ground, litter, rock, and vegetation by lifeform) from the resulting images will use SamplePoint software and will be done by either ranchers or agency personnel and will be jointly re-examined in case of a question. In addition to the transfer of monitoring technology to users, we also completed aerial surveys on 400,000 acres of public land, have developed a protocol for data storage by the agency, and are in the process of developing protocols for using this data for long-term condition and trend analysis.
