Gas Guzzler Tax
The Gas Guzzler Tax is assessed on new cars that do not meet required fuel economy levels. These taxes apply only to passenger cars. Trucks, minivans, and sport utility vehicles are not covered because these vehicle types were not widely available when Congress established the Gas Guzzler Tax provisions in the Energy Tax Act of 1978 and were rarely used for non-commercial purposes.
To determine if a vehicle is subject to the gas guzzler tax, go to fueleconomy.gov.
- Look up your car, truck, or SUV using the Find and Compare Cars tool.
- Click on the link to your model. (There may be multiple versions of each model).
- Click on the "Specs" file tab on top of the vehicle search results page.
- Scroll down the table to see whether the vehicle is subject to the gas guzzler tax.
